Herriman Saturday

Tuesday, November 17 1908 -- The hot-air balloons "America" and "United States", piloted by Captain A.E. Mueller and Captain Horace B. Wild, respectively, have taken off from L.A. They hope to guide their crafts eastward and see how far they might get, but after two days of fighting unfavorable winds, both crafts gave up the journey without making it out of the general vicinity.

Time to spare? Go by air.
Even then, flights were delayed.
