Stripper's Guide

 

Sally's So Sentimental ran as the Newspaper Feature Service magazine cover series from March 22 to June 6 1931. The art is credited to Philip Loring, who I believe is in actuality Paul Robinson, and it is a lovely art deco gem. The story, on the other hand, is even more gossamer-thin than usual. In fact in this case there is really no continuing story at all, despite the "To Be Continued" tagline at the end of each installment. Each week Sally gets dressed up in her best duds, attends some event and bewitches the most attractive man in attendance. End of installment, reload and repeat next week.

This series does the almost unthinkable when in the final installment Sally stands by as her sister gets wed. Did Loring not read the magazine cover writer's manual? The heroine ALWAYS gets married in the final installment. Sheesh.

Oh, and why is the word 'sentimental' used in the title? I have no idea. Sally exhibits no particular sentimentality all through the series. I get the funny feeling that Loring/Robinson didn't quite have a grasp of the word's meaning, and the editors at NFS couldn't be bothered to educate him.

In a dream team matchup, Nell Brinkley and Carolyn Wells got together in late 1928 to create the Sunday magazine cover series Pretty Polly. Brinkley did her customary beautiful job delineating those signature well-noodled beauties, while Wells spun a story in vignettes of a girl who feels that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. 

Polly emulates women in professions she admires, takes on the personality of admired film stars, and  it just never works out well for her. Naturally in the final episode, Polly fails to be a copycat and immediately finds true love from a tall, dapper gent who falls in love with the real her. 

Pretty Polly started out under the banner of King Features Syndicate on November 18 1928*, and switched over to another Hearst syndicate, International Feature Services, on February 17 1929. The series concluded on March 3**.

A bookkeeping note about this feature as it is listed in my book. I claimed then that there was another series of Pretty Polly that ran in 1927. This was based on a sample from that series I (supposedly) had in my collection. Well, since then I have combed through the collection looking for this 1927 Pretty Polly to no avail, and also failed to find any supporting evidence from online sources. At this point I'm pretty darn sure that the sample I supposedly have is a mistyped record or a cross-linked listing from some other series.

The magazine cover comic Francine the Freshie by Virginia Huget has that slightly sour smell of a fill-in, penned and scheduled in haste to fill a last minute gap. Since it is the work of Virginia Huget, and we know she's capable of writing a fine jazzy yarn, these short and downright business-like captions really leave us feeling short-changed. Thankfully Huget's art on this series, though certainly rougher than we are used to from her, is nevertheless pleasant to peruse. 

The story, what little there is of it, is that Francine goes off to college and (of course) meets the man of her dreams. However, this series is so short -- only four episodes -- that there is really no proper ending. Francine and "the football star" (he's not even got a name!) connive to get away from the college for a moonlight drive together, and that's it. I guess we are just to assume that love, marriage, babies, and old age pensions are to ensue. 

Francine the Freshie was syndicated by King Features, and ran from August 25 to September 15 1929.

As the King Features magazine covers more and more veered away from comics series, one of the last gasps was Hollywoodn't, with story by Jack Lait and art by Virginia Huget. Lait and Huget perform one of the best set-up acts you're going to see on the Hearst magazine covers, telling the story of a gorgeous farm gal, Glory, who is just too beautiful NOT to be in the movies. Despite her consistent refrain that she hates Hollywood, and that all she wants to do is marry a local boy and start making babies, her glamorous good looks seem to draw her as if magnetized to Tinseltown. 

As the story progresses the world is at her feet, and yet still all Glory wants is to tend her flock of chickens and make some country bumpkin a good wife. Finally, in the middle of making a movie she is asked out by the handsome leading man, who is nothing short of a prize wolf. Not caring one way or the other, she invites him to visit her on the farm, where he sneers at everything from her flock of chickens to her kinfolks. And then, out of the blue, in the final panel he asks her to marry him and she accepts. The end!

This strange series ran in only four installments, and the final one is obviously ending the story long before intended. What happened? Durned if I know.All I do know is that one of the strongest stories of the magazine cover genre was short-circuited; what a shame.

So far we've only covered one other R.F. James magazine cover series here, Let's Run Away, way back in 2010. At the time I remarked on how similar his style was to Russell Patterson's, but I tempered that with the observation that James had a thing-for doll-like white faces for his girls. Finally we have another of his series, Don't Tell Auntie, and yes, those cadaver-esque doll faces seem to be a consistent feature of his work. 

Don't Tell Auntie concerns a pair of bratty sisters who try to convince their very rich and strait-laced  aunt that they should inherit her considerable dough. But the young debs have little willpower when it comes to parties, men, smoking, drinking, and just about any other vice you care to name, and thus constantly get in dutch with the dowager. Lots of silly shenanigans ensue in this 16-episode series, but you needn't wonder what happens in the end because the concluding episode is right here above. 

Don't Tell Auntie ran from March 13 to May 29 1932 in the Hearst magazine cover series that was in the midst of switching from the Newspaper Feature Service to King Features.

Nell Brinkley was a regular contributor of Hearst magazine cover series, even though she seemed to be kept plenty busy on the weekday romantic cartoons as well. You'd never know she was overworked, though, when you look at the amazing design work that went into pages like this one from The Romances of Gloriette. Seriously, embiggen this cover and just marvel at that top panel especially. 

The story told in verse is supplied by Berton Braley, and it's the standard romantic girl-spurns-boy-until-she-doesn't business. This series, distributed through Hearst's International Features Service arm, ran from August 10 to November 16 1930.

Yet another in a long string of Russell Patterson Hearst magazine cover series, Get-Your-Man Gloria ran under the King Features imprint from March 27 to May 29 1932. 

This series throws a lazily-breaking curveball into the standard romance formula. Gloria Glayde is a reporter for the Clarion newspaper, and she'll do just about anything to get the dirt on high society folks, even if she has to inject herself to manufacture a headline. Her favorite target is Derek Denbeigh, heir to a ketchup fortune -- he's a hunk, he's rich, he's single and he falls for just about every trap Gloria lays for him. Poor Derek can't decide if he loves or hates Gloria for all her shenanigans, but I'll leave it to your imagination which of those emotions wins over in the end. Gloria, on the other hand, still seems to prefer playing him for the fool even come the end of the series, a bit of a surprise change to the formula.

Fish, the great British cartoonist, had a long relationship with the American Weekly, producing quite a few series over about a decade and a half. Here's an early offering, Petty-June at College. This one is about a vacuous little John Held-style flapper-deb. The series appeared on American Weekly covers from November 18 1928 to February 10 1929, and was popular enough that the character returned for a second series, Petty-June Does Europe.

I think Fish did tremendous work, and I'm surprised no retrospective book of her cartoons and illustrations has been produced. Am I alone in my admiration for her work?

The Philadelphia Public Ledger had some great Sunday magazine covers that they offered through their syndicate, but rarely did they form a series. Hearst loved the romantic magazine cover series, but Ledger stood pretty firm on the side of one-shots.

One of the few exceptions was Flapper Fairy Tales, which brought together the verses of Ruth Plumly Thompson and the art of Ledger regular Charles J. Coll. Thompson is well-known to Oz fans for her many books continuing Baum's original series, and she also wrote a long-running series of children's stories for the Ledger. Here she jumps well out of her regular groove to write jazzy adult fare, and, well, I'll let you decide for yourself if she succeeds.

Flapper Fairy Tales ran from April 21 to May 26 1929.

Raeburn Van Buren was just about to embark on a long stint working on Hearst's daily romantic cartoon series when he was tapped to provide a very short series for their Sunday magazine covers. Let's All Elope was only three episodes long, and foolishly tried to tackle a story of two star-crossed couples in a comedy of errors that needed way more space to make any sense to readers. The final episode, above, reads more like the Cliff's Notes to the story than the story itself.

Let's All Elope ran from February 12 to 26 1933, and comes just months before the end of the King Features magazine cover series. With cover series like this, no wonder it was cancelled.

The short-running magazine series Juliet a-la Jazz ran from April 16 to May 21 1933 and marked Russell Patterson's last magazine cover series for Hearst for the next six years. Not that there was anything wrong with the series, since it sticks like gum to the shoe sole of the standard romantic magazine cover formula. Leggy redhead Juliet is cast in a play and the only question is whether she'll pick the leading man, the stage manager or the director to be her off-stage romantic lead.

Carolyn Wells and Fish were both tremendous talents, but I think Wells was a better artist than she was a versifier, and Fish was a better writer than she was an artist. So what does the American Weekly do but put the two together and assign each the role in which they're weaker.

Curious Kitty is a pretty forgettable cover series that ran in the American Weekly from June 28 to August 30 1931. The plot is that Kitty keeps getting in trouble because of her insatiable curiosity, until the final installment ... well, go ahead and read it yourself, because our sample is the concluding episode of the saga. All's well that ends well.

After our big project of Hearst magazine cover indexing back in January, here finally we're covering one of those series. This one is Sylvia the Deb Detective, by R.F. James. I'll spare you from going back to the index and tell you that the series ran from June 5 to October 23 1932.

This wacky series begins with a rich debutante who is just about to appear at her coming out party. Her doting papa has given her an extravagant present for the occasion, an enormous jewel. Dressing for the party, she discovers that the jewel has been stolen.

Sylvia Ritzmore, the rich deb, decides that rather than call the cops or a private dick, she will play detective and find that priceless jewel herself. Apparently this is just fine with Mama and Papa, and she proceeds to drag her boyfriend Hugh off to help her find the rock.

The fast-paced story follows Sylvia all over the world, always just one step behind the jewel thieves. Poor Hugh gets left behind after awhile, though Sylvia hardly seems to notice. No problem, she just picks up another handsome beau, Bob, a few installments later. He's better anyway because he's a flier, and they have a lot of travelling to do.

After lots of adventure and intrigue, Sylvia recovers not only her jewel, but a whole treasure trove of additional sparklers, making her even richer than she was. In the final installment  (spoiler alert!) Bob proposes to the Deb Detective and Everyone Lives Happily Ever After.

After devoting such a long time to Hearst magazine covers last month, let's cleanse the palate with one from Pulitzer.

Although the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was where Joseph Pulitzer began his newspaper empire, once he had the New York World, the P-D ceased to be the flagship paper in the chain. Most but not quite all comics and features issued forth from the World, but every once in a while the Post-Dispatch threw its weight around, replacing those issued features with local content.

An example of that is Fascinating Phyllis, which was used on the Sunday magazine covers of the Post-Dispatch for awhile instead of the New York material. This pretty girl cover series was first seen on May 14 1911, before the pretty girl magazine cover story strip had even become a standard trope. The pleasant art was by Marguerite Martyn, who was employed for many years at the Post-Dispatch in both an artistic and reportorial capacity.  The verse was supplied by Willis Leonard Clanahan, who shows up on the interwebs for a few published stories and songs.

Fascinating Phyllis ran on the Sunday magazine covers in the P-D through August 27 1911.

Well, hey, if we have a series of longer stories, that must mean we have a series of shorter ones, right? So this is that. I supposed you could also call it the Virginia Huget series, since her lovely art graced it consistently until September 1929.

I am able to track this series back to October 1927, which means it just possibly might dovetail with a missing section of that Dan Smith series (part 1 of this index). It doesn't rejoin that series in September 1928, though, so maybe not. There just aren't enough online newspapers to track this stuff with any real assurance. I seem to be joining Adventurous Anne in mid-story, so this series does go back at least a little farther.

I tracked this series in the Philadelphia Inquirer after wasting a lot of time indexing another paper that turned out to be running it really late and sometimes out of order. At the end of 1929, when this index ends, the material seems to dovetail with what I indexed in part 2 of this index. However, in the Inquirer at least, this material was copyrighted by King Features Syndicate throughout, whereas that one starts off credited to Newspaper Feature Service. Ah, what a tangled web we weave ....

This is the second part of the index for the 'longer stories' series, this one covering 1930 to the apparent end of it in 1933.

This index was compiled based on the Cincinnati Enquirer starting in 1930, then in January 1931 I had to switch to the Miami News when the microfilmer of the Enquirer decided that Sunday magazines weren't worth the time to photograph. The Miami News dropped the cover in July of that year, so then I switched to the Minneapolis Tribune. The Tribune got me to the apparent end of the series, which I was able to confirm in a second paper.

The syndicate, which had been International Feature Service, changed to King Features Syndicate in January 1932. I believe this is when IFS was phased out as a separate syndication company for Hearst.

Our next series of magazine covers is indexed starting in July 1926, premiering with the very long Gloria - The American Girl series by Penrhyn Stanlaws.

While no subsequent cover series would rival Gloria in length, my search for an identity of this syndicate offering leads me to call it the 'long stories' series. The syndicate was originally King Features Syndicate, but changed to International Feature Service in early 1929 for some reason. This change happened in the middle of a story, so I don't think there's any chance that I somehow conflated two separate series.

If you look back at part 5 of this index series, you'll think that today's series is merely a continuation of  the so-called 'romantic cover series', since the dates mesh perfectly. However, I do have samples in my collection of Gloria - The American Girl running earlier than this (back to 1925), so I think I have just not been successful in tracking this series back to its true origin. I have found the early Gloria series running in the San Francisco Call, which is not, as far as I know, available online yet.

One addditonal note; if my inventory doesn't lie, there seems to have been an earlier series of Nell Brinkley's Pretty Polly - I show one from January 1927 somewhere in my collection. Or I mistyped?

It turns out in my magazine cover research that in 1921 you could get your American Weekly Hearst covers in two flavors: one with the masthead with which we're familiar, or one with no masthead at all and copyrighted by International Feature Service.

That practice seems to have halted in mid-August 1921, when the Dan Smith cover series was inaugurated and took over for the International Feature Service-branded  American Weekly.

However, it wasn't quite that simple. It seems that you could choose another new (?) series, also syndicated by IFS, that instead of Dan Smith covers offered what I call the 'romantic cover' option. This series featured lots of pretty girls as is typical of the Hearst covers, but these ones are focused on romance. In other words, looking to please the female audience more than the male.

I began tracking this series in the Butte Miner, where due to some slight crossover with the Dan Smith series at the beginning I believe that the Miner runs their covers a week later than intended. The series runs in the Miner through the end of 1923, after which I switched to the Minneapolis Tribune, filling in a long unavailable section of that from the Tampa Tribune. The Minneapolis Tribune stopped using this series in June 1926, and I can find no other paper that used it any later.

A new week has begun and we'll continue on our quest to index Hearst magazine cover series.

I sure wish I had some way to title these series so that I could talk with some clarity about them. But I'm not even sure of what I'm doing, much less how to identify which is which. So, rather than trying to come up with some cockamamie name, I'm going to tell you that the series we're going to trace today is one that diverged from the series we talked about last week in 1935. Why this happened I couldn't even begin to guess.

What I can say is that this series tends to concentrate on pin-ups created by many very big name artists. I'm talking Petty, Barclay, Christy, La Gatta, Armstrong, etc.

This divergent series was found in  the El Paso Times.

Perhaps the most interesting discovery for comic strip fans is that Alex Raymod contributed three superb covers (above). I have none in tearsheet form, so the best I can offer are images from the microfilm.

I gave up writing this index at the end of 1937, as I didn't see any series developing. Looking ahead, this cover series went on into the 1940s, looking pretty much like they stuck to their guns of featuring mostly pin-up covers.There are lots of great covers, just not really in my research focus. If anyone has the time and inclination to continue this index, I'll be very happy to publish it.
